Combating Gender-Based Violence: A Collective Responsibility for a Just and Equal Future

Gender-Based Violence is a harsh reality affecting millions of women and girls worldwide. It is a form of violence based on gender and manifests in various ways, including physical, sexual, psychological, and economic violence.

Scope of the Problem:

  • According to the UN, one in three women has experienced violence during her lifetime.
  • Every day, 137 women are killed by family members.
  • Gender-based violence is the leading cause of death and disability for women aged 15-44.

Forms of Gender-Based Violence:

  • Physical Violence: Beatings, injuries, murder.
  • Sexual Violence: Rape, sexual assault, harassment, incest.
  • Psychological Violence: Bullying, insults, threats, verbal abuse.
  • Economic Violence: Resource deprivation, financial control, exploitation.
  • Cyber Violence: Online bullying, harassment, image exploitation.

Consequences of Gender-Based Violence:

Gender-based violence is a severe violation of human rights with devastating effects on individuals, families, and society, such as:

  • Physical harm, injuries, death.
  • Psychological problems, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress.
  • Social isolation, poverty, dependence.
  • Limited opportunities for education and employment.

Causes of Gender-Based Violence:

Gender-based violence results from a complex interplay of factors at individual, societal, and cultural levels, including:

  • Patriarchy and gender inequalities.
  • Social and cultural stereotypes.
  • Tolerance of violence.
  • Lack of laws and protection mechanisms.
  • Victims’ inability to speak out and seek help.

Prevention and Combating Gender-Based Violence:

Combating gender-based violence is a social and moral imperative, requiring a collective effort from all sectors of society. Here are some key strategies for preventing and addressing gender-based violence:

Prevention:

  • Education: Promoting gender equality and respect from a young age is crucial for preventing gender-based violence. Education should focus on eliminating stereotypes and biases, empowering women and girls, and fostering healthy relationships.
  • Awareness: Informing the public about gender-based violence, its forms, and available support services is essential. Awareness can be achieved through information campaigns, educational programs, and artistic events.
  • Support for Victims: Providing easy access to support services for victims of gender-based violence is necessary. These services should cover a wide range, including psychological support, legal assistance, and shelter.
  • Empowerment of Women: Empowering women and enhancing their economic and social autonomy are fundamental for preventing gender-based violence. Providing equal opportunities for education and employment, promoting women’s entrepreneurship, and involving women in decision-making are essential.

Combating:

  • Legislation: Enacting strict laws that criminalize all forms of gender-based violence and ensure effective prosecution of perpetrators and protection of victims.
  • Justice: Ensuring victims of gender-based violence have access to justice is fundamental. The justice process should be fair, accessible, and free from discrimination.
  • Support for Victims: Providing easy access to support services for victims of gender-based violence is crucial. These services should address psychological support, legal aid, and housing.

It is important to emphasize that preventing and combating gender-based violence is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone can contribute by adopting a zero-tolerance attitude towards violence, promoting respect for others, and supporting victims of gender-based violence.
